Diaper Change in the Trunk ... Why Not?

We just returned home from our church's annual LIFT (Ladies In Fellowship Together) dinner. About 400 women (including me and Mary) gathered together to eat a great catered meal and kick-off the ladies' fall Bible studies. Our Sunday school class filled up two tables! The tables are a big deal. Each table has a hostess who arrives early to decorate the table; they can be simple and elegant or over-the-top, as long as they go along with this year's theme - Life's Treasures. I really enjoy the LIFT dinner event and was excited to bring along Mary this year. However, Stephen and I have picked up on something new in our little girl's personality - she likes to be entertained. She is not the cute and quiet baby sitting happily in her car seat. No, not Mary. She likes to be bounced, held, passed around, whatever, as long as she's moving. So, I was a little nervous about how she would do in a big dinner setting with music and a speaker. Thankfully, Stephen volunteered to come along and be on "dad duty" in case she got fussy... which of course, she did. After visiting and fellowshipping with the other ladies, I took Mary to her daddy out in a different part of the church. I returned to eat my dinner and enjoy the event. Meanwhile, Stephen walked, bounced, and strolled. Then he walked, bounced, and strolled. Followed by another round of walking, bouncing, and strolling. I think you get the idea. After a while, it was time for a diaper change. Unfortunately, most men's restrooms aren't equipped with a changing table, so what's a daddy to do? The trunk of the car! That's right, folks. My beautiful, precious bundle of joy had her diaper changed in the trunk of our 2003 Focus. Stephen said that she seemed to like stretching out, so he kept her in there for a while, playing with whatever he could find to entertain her (which happened to be a colorful travel pack of tissues I left in the diaper bag). After an hour, I got a frantic call on my cell phone right before the event's speaker (sewing guru Martha Pullen) was about to begin. Mary (and Daddy) had had enough. Time to go. I honestly was surprised they lasted as long as they did, but I am extremely grateful to my wonderful husband for letting me enjoy the event. Although, I'm sure he's glad it's only once a year!
